California Domestic Workers Coalition

FLSA Status: Exempt

Start Date: ASAP

Reports to: Member Engagement Director

The National Domestic Workers Alliance (NDWA) is the nation’s leading voice for respect, recognition and labor standards for nannies, house cleaners and home care workers. Through leadership development, strategic campaigns and alliance building, we are raising employment standards for the domestic workforce while building a powerful movement for social and global justice. The Alliance formed in 2007 at the US Social Forum and is made up of 70 affiliate organizations and chapters, and a growing base of thousands of individual workers throughout the U.S.

The Digital Organizer will be part of the NDWA Member Engagement team that uses digital organizing tools to engage and grow our base of domestic workers. Initially, a particular focus of this role will be in California, the state with the largest number of domestic workers in the country. Growing our base in California will be a key to increasing our power nationally. NDWA works in close collaboration with the California Domestic Worker Coalition (CDWC), which includes 12 of NDWA’s California-based affiliate organizations and one NDWA chapter.

In 2013, after many years of organizing, domestic workers in the state won the California Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. In June 2019, the state approved a $5 million budget allocation to establish an outreach and education program, a first-of-its-kind state co-enforcement program to promote awareness of, and compliance with, labor protections that affect the domestic workforce–and in 2020 the CDWC won the contract to coordinate the enforcement program. While CDWC and NDWA’s California affiliates will be developing on-the-ground enforcement outreach and education programs, the Digital Organizer will create online community and training spaces for workers in other parts of the state, as well as for specific subsets of the domestic workforce who are not organized by existing local organizations.

The focus of the Digital Organizer’s work will be to:
